The Sleep of the Gods eBook James Sperl
The Sleep of the Gods by James Sperl is a fun, upbeat romp through an end-of-the-world post apocalyptic landscape. It reads like an adventure movie as you travel with the characters from once bizarre action sequence into the next. Although there were a few moments when my suspension of disbelief were shattered, overall it’s well worth the read.SPOILER: The “New Humans” in the book (the world ending event) are a sort of zombie; however, unlike every zombie book I’ve ever encountered, they are beings of light. The New Human are thinking rational zombies with tactics. In the text one of them even refers to themselves as “enlightened” and that “all they know is that they want to share a gift they’ve been given.” The book rings with clear Christian undertones, as the New Human are even reborn into their new form and seek desperately to make (convert?) other humans into creatures such as they. They are so much a creature of light that darkness literally hurts them and the regular humans throughout the book are often portrayed as the true monsters. A great twist on a typically gory, bloody genre.

The Sleep of the Gods eBook James Sperl Reviews
Was looking for a Post-apocalyptic read available on the , and came across this book. While a little far fetched, it was entertaining and a very quick read. I was pleasantly surprised and think this author could write a compelling sequel if he chose to. I struggled with whether to give 5 or 4 stars, and the primary reason I took a star off is in the version, for some inexplicable reason, the font is constantly changing back and forth. At first I was trying to figure out if there was any rhyme or reason to it, and either I've missed some secret meaning, or there was just a terrible job in editing/converting this for the . Even for $2.99, which was a bargain, I have a hard time justifying a book going to market with different font types every couple of paragraphs.
It was exactly what I was hoping for! An apocalyptic novel full of suspense and action that keeps you turning pages. I really don't get the negative reviews about the "scientific" aspects of the book ruining the plot. The book was very well written and thus easy to get absorbed into the story and suspend belief when you needed to. It is after all a fiction book and I don't expect all the scientific details to measure up and to be on par with what you might find in a non fiction book. Also don't shy away if you're thinking you won't enjoy it because it's involves zombies. I have no interest in the typical zombie books and this is nothing like those. I can't say more without giving away the plot but I think the word "zombie" is mentioned maybe twice and for me at least, what happens to some of the people in the story is not what I imagine a zombie to be. All and all a great book and highly recommended for any that enjoy apocalyptic fiction!
I really do not feel the title fits the story, but the title is what drew me to the book in the first place so I can not complain to much. The story is really wonderful. I was blown away that the author was a man because so any stories written by men do not seem to really get women. I can usually spot a man's version of a strong woman a mile away, so I give the author major kudos. I do have a complaint I stayed up to 4 AM for two nights in a row while reading this. I did not want to put it down! Now that's a good story! I was totally entertained from start to finish and plan on rereading it sometime in the future. Another thing I loved about the book was the ending. I was not left hanging! It was a good ending that had a finality to it without being so sad that your mad that you spent all that time reading the story only to have it end like that. Pat yourself on the back James Sperl! Okay with that being said, I feel like I am going to have to read some more of his books. If they are anything like this one I should plan on more sleepless nights of reading....
Devouring all post-apocalyptic fiction that I can find, Sperl's debut is my latest meal. At $2.39, you get an entertaining story with a novel (to me) disease mechanism, albeit one that's never explained. Military members will note distracting inconsistencies in logistics and terminology -- I'm not sure where the author did his research, if any, but the military content is disturbingly outdated. Thankfully the author strays far from subject areas such as epidemiology, medicine, and the spectre of homeland security.
The pace is good, and character development is adequate. The author's strength lies in a steady current of engaging prose that prompts a hungry reader to keep turning the page (or to hit "Next Page" on their ). I never felt as if the story was lagging, a problem common to new authors in this genre. The potential for a sequel certainly exists.
I did not have any font issues with this book, but I did update my software to the latest release version 2 days ago. Reading other reviews, it would appear those issues were either fixed on the release end or via the software push.
Recommended as a quick and leisurely read at $2.39.
