This is the tale of Pinni Roane, a selchie, who reaps the consequences of poor judgment when she convinces her sistren-seals to spend the night moonbathing in human form on a beach. When their seal-furs are stolen, they are fated to become dutiful wives to the fishermen who capture them. Only Pinni’s daughter, Lucy, has the chance to be returned to the sea as she is promised by Tallulah, the old Creole woman, that a handsome young Gabriel will come to save her. When Pinni hands Lucy over to Gabriel, she watches in horror as she discovers that he is a morlock, an evil cave dweller. She can only hope that Lucy uses the best of her seal-skills to outwit the morlock and return happily to the sea.
The Selchies of St. Martin is told in folktale fashion, and reflects the decisions that mothers make about their daughters; along with the decisions that humans make about the treatment of animals. This story was inspired by an article about the extinction of the Caribbean Monk Seal in the 1940’s.
